Climate adaptation, energy transition, housing issues — major social challenges require a new generation of professionals. But preparing students for this requires more than just theory. Digitalization and practice-oriented tools are indispensable.
“As a teacher, you have to know what is there. Otherwise, you cannot prepare your students for it. You have to give them knowledge and skills from practice,” says our project leader Margriet Visscher, who supervises the trajectory with the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences from Future Insight.
On January 15, the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences took an important step: by signing the covenant, they officially joined the Open Urban Platform Rotterdam. In doing so, they demonstrate their commitment and ambition to connect education and the city through digitalization.
From Future Insight we have stimulated this process. In various sessions we shared our knowledge of digitalization and brought together employees from the courses of construction engineering, facility management, and the institute for communication, media and information technology. We showed what digitalization can mean for education — and therefore for the city. Software makes a great contribution to this thanks to Christoph Maria, initiator and driving force from the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.
We created movement within the university:
– Teachers from various courses entered into discussions with each other;
– Awareness arose about the necessity and possibilities of data-driven work;
– First ideas for educational innovation based on the use of data and applications have emerged.
This is the effect of structural collaboration on digitalisation: it strengthens partnership, accelerates innovation and links policy to practice.
Thanks to Christoph Maria for the assignment and the trust. We look forward to the next phase in which we will further expand this movement.
